Unfortunately, the world is not what it used to be, and kids are faced with a lot more emotional changes or transitions that would be a lot easier and comforting to get through with a security item to make them feel content, safe, and loved. Situations such as divorce, daycare changes, unfamiliar places, moving, worldwide pandemics, and frequent doctor and hospital visits which make it hard on us as adults, but even harder for children. Coming from a rocky background in and out of foster care I can relate what it would have been like to have a security blanket or lovey item to help soothe and comfort the transitions, or just an item to call my own through each of the foster homes. I have watched how much it has benefited my son who is sensory driven and has a little bit of anxiety. It calms and soothes him when I am not there to do so. I feel it is the next best thing to a parent’s love and comfort to a child especially since it is full of familiar scents from home and gives children a sense of security, comfort and calmness.
